# Design tokens, explained: the language your AI actually understands

> Colors and fonts are the obvious part. The real power is naming decisions so a machine can apply them consistently.

A design token is a named design decision. Instead of "#4f9bf5", you have "color.accent.default." Instead of "16px," you have "space.4." That indirection sounds bureaucratic until you realize it's exactly what lets a tool — or a model — apply a decision the same way in a hundred places.

## Why tokens beat a palette

A raw palette tells you which colors exist. Tokens tell you what they're for. "Accent" vs "destructive" vs "muted-foreground" carry intent, and intent is what an AI needs to place a color correctly instead of just using something that's roughly the right hue.

## The W3C format matters

The W3C Design Tokens spec gives everyone — Figma, your codebase, your AI builder — a shared file format. When we export tokens, they're in that format, so they're portable across your whole stack instead of trapped in one tool.
